about

Liner notes:

This is a collection of sound sculptures I created around the same time I was working on Dreams Vol. 1 (between 2020 and 2021).

While Dreams Vol. 1 was rooted in writing and playing traditional rock instrumentation, making simpler melodic and rhythmic ideas into psych-rock folk tunes, this work is focused on a less rigid approach to music, viewing composition as the organization of sound.

The individual elements that make up this music were gradually constructed over the course of several years, some dating as far back as 2016, but it was during the first pandemic lockdowns that I began editing them, carving them out and connecting them to create this work as a whole.

The music was created mostly within computers. Very few traditional acoustic instruments were utilized in its creation. The acoustic instruments that were involved have been heavily processed and sound very little like their original recordings. The rest of the sonic material was created through various means, including but not limited to; field-recordings captured with smart phones, sounds generated with free software on smart phones, algorithm based manipulations using Max-MSP programming, granular synthesis, and Michael Norris’ spectral processing.

This music was conceived as a a whole, in two halves (like two sides of an album). The first half is a six part sequence that contains minimalist, electronica and environmental gestures. Computer music reaching for playful improvisation with scattered interpolations.

The second half is made up of two pieces, Hyper Plaid Fulcrum is a lengthy deconstruction and exploration of an electronic drum break accompanied by heavily modified violin drone, this is followed by a 2 and a half minute drifting ambient piece which serves as a resolution for the whole thing.
