"Ivy”
This track grew out of me setting up the drums for the first time in a long time and playing along with a metronome that is capable of polyrhythms, in this case it’s a 3 against 5, the drum groove that you hear at the 0:49 second mark was recorded by iPhone. I thought sounded good enough to use as an element, that recording eventually fades out and fades in again later toward the end. There is a pre-programmed drum machine loop that is in the mix featuring tambourine accenting the 3 count, and some cowbell that accents every other quarter note of a two bar pattern in 5/4. I like that it allows the listener to focus in on either pulse depending their attention. Later on there is an intentional metric modulation from the predominant 5/4 pulse to the slower, overlaid pattern in 3/4.
There are two drums tracks that were more mindfully recorded, and then panned them left and right. I wanted to record a drone-like a jam session that would allow some looser improvisation. The organ drone playing 2 alternating chords served as a nice colour backing.
I recorded several takes of drones with an old violin that belonged to my grandfather and mashed them together to create an additional drone colour to come in and out of the background.
Bass was added in one take, and then edited a little bit to provide stability. Guitars were recorded in only a couple improvised takes.
The main melodic theme that comes in on the piano was originally written on guitar, but in the end I decided to leave the guitar doubling out because I thought the guitars had enough going on. The synth part at the end could very well be a horn part.
